SJS

In late 1950's and early 1960's the Blue Note record label was putting out scores of albums by artists such as Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, and Jackie McLean. These albums had a fresh new sound with an appeal that crossed the boundaries between jazz and popular music - Soul Jazz.

Integrating elements of Bebop, early R & B and blues the Soul Jazz sound has been the most heavily sampled music by Hip Hop DJ's for it's intensely funky and soulful grooves. What sets it apart from other jazz music with cross over appeal is an unwillings to keep the tunes short - long, exciting improvisations are still the centerpiece of this style. Wailing saxophones, singing trumpets, thundering bass!!!

The Soul Jazz Society is a group of up and coming Toronto based musicians who share a passion for this unique musical movement. Watch out for the SJS in downtown jazz clubs near you!!
